Limbo Accra: Africa’s Liminal Futures

Project type

Exhibition Design, Scenography, Spatial Design

Date

November 2023

Location

Chicago Cultural Center

Role

Exhibition Designer

Client

Limbo Accra

Developed for Limbo Accra at the fifth edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, this exhibition design explored incomplete and abandoned buildings as one of the defining architectural conditions across contemporary African cities.

The spatial concept centred on creating a threshold environment that honoured incompleteness without aestheticising it. Working within a corridor space at the Chicago Cultural Center, floor zoning structured movement and viewing conditions, while projection, soundscape, and photography were composed as a layered spatial system that shifted the visitor’s frame of reference.

Developed in collaboration with digital designer Thomas McLucas, the installation brought together photogrammetry, field recordings, and visual documentation from Ghana, Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Nigeria. The result was an immersive environment that translated research into spatial experience, inviting audiences to reconsider abandonment as a condition of transformation and future-making.

In collaboration with: Thomas McLucas, Digital Design and Photogrammetry

Exhibition ran: November 2023 – February 2024
